Hurricane Proof your Guns.

Here in Florida hurricanes will always be an issue. Always! Many of us have our guns safely stored in a locked room or storage area, but there are a few more items we need to address - especially during hurricane season. First, make sure you have your guns properly insured if possible. It is important to make sure that your property is properly insured. Proof of insurance can either be scanned and digitally stored on a thumb drive in a safe dry location or online on a cloud storage application such as Google Drive or Dropbox. Another key step in storing your information is to use either win.zip or 7 zip to store all your documents in a single zip format (you can password protect the zip file if desired).

Once your paperwork has been taken care of, the next step is to thoroughly clean and lubricate your firearms. This is very important. Why? Well your firearms will be shiny and clean for the next time you use them, but more importantly, no matter where your firearms are stored, a clean and well lubricated firearm is protected from most forms rust and corrosion should they be - somehow - exposed to the environment. This is especially true if you live in a coastal area.

So, once your firearms are clean and very well lubricated, the next thing is to thoroughly wrap your firearms in plastic to provide further waterproofing. Use a large enough garbage bag and wrap with cling film and then maybe duck tape. Additionally, both the slides and bolts can be removed and stored separately as an extra safety measure.

The next step in hurricane proofing your firearms, if it is affordable, is to purchase a gun safe large enough for your collection., like the highly recommended DEFCON safes. A good safe will protect your collection not only from intruders, but also from the elements. Keep in mind that all safes, including gun safes, must be installed correctly. Typically, these safes must be bolted into the ground/ foundation (or wall studs) of your home in order to provide maximum protection. If you cannot afford a gun safe right now, I would suggest placing your firearms in anything with a sturdy lock in the driest place possible.

Take a look at some of the gun safes that we have in stock at our Orlando Gun shops and website locations. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
